Utrillo Kushner is a Bay Area musician who has been playing and making music for over 20 years. A lifelong drummer Utrillo started playing drums at the wee age of 14 and continues to play to this day. In his early twenties he instinctively branched out to piano as a vehicle to write and record his own songs. Drawing inspiration from DIY song-writers, folk rock troubadours, movie soundtracks, and the soft sounds of the 70ies mainstream Utrillo forged his own style of homespun piano based music. A fan of home recordings & cassette culture Utrillo started his own Flat Fruit Tape Company in 1996. Throughout the years Utrillo released various cassettes under different monikers finally sticking with Colossal Yes in 1999. Though consistently working on his own songs Utrillo concentrated mainly on playing drums and keyboard in Comets on Fire from 2002 through 2008. Based off a home recorded six song demo Colossal Yes was singed to the Ba Da Bing label in 2004. Colossal Yes's first proper studio album, Acapulco Roughs, was recorded in 2005 and released in 2006. The second full length, Charlemagne's Big Thaw, was released on LP in 2008 and on CD in 2009. Utrillo is currently living in Oakland, CA and working on a follow-up album which should be finished sometime in the Fall of 2011. |
